Notice to the Bar: Assignment of Cases for Mediation - Friday, November 21, 2014

A recent inquiry on behalf of a locally based mediator as to how cases are assigned caused us to re-examine the process. Civil cases eligible for mediation pursuant to R. 1:40-4, et seq., are assigned by court staff to mediators listed on the Superior Court of New Jersey Roster of Civil Mediators List. An application for admission to this roster is available on the court’s website,

The court’s goal is to assign these cases in an equitable manner and to provide quality service that continuously improves and meets or exceeds the public’s expectations. We have re-engineered the process to ensure that the staff in the Civil Division assigns each case sequentially and based on areas of expertise.

Effective immediately, based on the caseload and dependent upon areas of expertise, mediators on the list should expect to be called upon about twice a year. We thank them for their willingness to serve and for their expertise. Additional inquiries may be sent to either the Civil Division Presiding Judge or the Civil Division Manager’s Office.
