Representing Domestic Violence Victims Obtaining Final Restraining Orders

October 28, 2020

9:00 am - 1:00 pm

4 CLE Credits

  The Essex County Bar Foundation in cooperation with Partners for Women and Justice is offering training, materials and CLE credit to all attendees who volunteer to accept one (1) pro bono case during the next 12 months.

Join us for a virtual training on how to represent low income victims of domestic violence in restraining order trials in family court. By accepting a domestic violence case pro bono, you can assist alleged victims in securing protection and relief. The training will cover:

  • An overview of what constitutes domestic violence under the law;
  • The legal standard and a step-by-step review of the procedure to obtain a final restraining order;
  • Issues to consider if children are involved, e.g. visitation, custody and financial support;
  • Forms of relief available in a final restraining order; and
  • What to do in the event the restraining order is violated.
